Keep that same Energy

January is kinda like a Drake album. Hype at the beginning, but about 3 times longer than it should be. At least that’s the way it seems. January 1st is the most crowded day at the gym but something happens and by February 1st its dead in there. Lookin' like where they at tho?

If the whole world operated on that first week of January, fresh off New Years Resolutions type energy for the rest of the year imagine what we could do. The fact is tho, that it ain't easy. I know I'm not the only one who wishes that they could keep that same energy throughout the year. We all have dreams, here are some tips to make sure they make it past January.

1. No more Birdbox Challenge.

What you can see, you can achieve! The first step is to get your dream out of your head to somewhere you can see it everyday. It could be a post-it note at your desk or changing your phone screensaver but to keep that same energy we have to be reminded of the goal every day. Visualizing the dream is the first step to living the dream.

2. State your dreams as Action Items.

State your dream as action items. State your desires as prayers. Its hard to keep the same energy when the we cant see the end in sight. But when we flip the switch (flip flip)

and state our dreams as action items we change our perspective. Find ways to break it down to smaller achievable goals. For me, I have a monthly goal, a weekly goal, and a daily goal. I know that if I put all my energy to achieving my daily goal, I am guaranteed to be on the track to living my dream. That way, I don’t have to keep up that same energy over a whole year, just over one day. When you break it down ask yourself this. What do I have to do today so I can do what I want to do tomorrow?

3. Step off your Island.

Confide in a team of friends that have your best interest at heart. Let them know your vision. Let them into the process. Find people who will encourage you, challenge you, and enable you. Someone to hype you up when you're at the bottom AND to bring you down when you're doing too much.

4. Use it or Lose it.

We gotta make sure we work while we’re ahead. If we know we have the “energy” now, know we’re eventually gonna lose it. Do everything you can now to prepare for the times when the energy isn't there. Know yourself! You already know that if the sweatpants come on, you're not leaving the house again that night. We gotta make sure to do our work before the sweatpants come on! One way that is successful is to structure your daily life so that it facilitates your goals. For example, if one of your goals was to wake up earlier why would you set your alarm for the same time as before?

If your goal was to take more pictures why would you leave your camera at home? If your goal was to do better in classes but you don’t have a planner…I hope you see where this is going. Its up to us to structure our lives in a way that makes it easy for us to reach our goals. Whatever that means for you, whether it means always carrying an idea notebook in your car, or setting an alarm for 9PM every night reminding you to “Double Check on Your HW bruh”, or buying a phone case that can carry your gym card so you never forget it. These little things help us especially on the days that we don’t feel like we have the energy. Its not fake it till you make it. Its face it till you make it.

5. Trust that the end is on its way.

All that is futile if you don’t have a solid, unshakeable faith that you will succeed. If you don’t believe with everything that you are that the dreams that you have will happen you're running your marathon on a treadmill. You're doing whole lot of work just to stay in the same place. This blog has been a marathon of faith for me. The first time I thought about creating a space like this was early 2017. I knew this was my ultimate goal but I broke it down into small goals. I structured my life to make it easier to achieve my dream. I had a great team of people around me. And throughout those years I was irrevocably committed to the progression from idea to actualization. For me, strength comes exclusively from the promises laid down in the Bible. Verses like Ephesians 3:20, 1 Corinthians 13:10 and Romans 8:30. When I don’t have the strength, when I'm doubting myself, when I cant see the end of the road I choose to trust in a power greater than myself. And that has made all the difference.

What about you? Which step do you need to work on? How else do you stay motivated? Comment what ways you can apply one of the steps to your dreams and visions!
